Module 1.1 — Literacy Leadership: Knowledge &amp; Expertise (Primary/EY &amp; Secondary)Every literacy strategy starts with the leader driving it. This course builds the foundational knowledge every literacy lead needs before designing a whole-school approach — what literacy actually encompasses, how it connects to learning and leadership, and what the evidence says about effective practice.You'll explore leadership theory and frameworks (including the NPQLL and inclusive leadership traits), examine the link between disadvantage, SEND and literacy outcomes, and unpack five safeguards against superficial "literacy theatre." Real school case studies bring the theory to life, and a structured self-audit helps you benchmark your own starting point as a leader.By the end, you'll have a clear, evidence-informed picture of what strong literacy leadership looks like — and where your own next steps lie.Module 1.2 — Developing &amp; Implementing a Whole School Literacy Strategy (CORE) (Primary/EY &amp; Secondary)Why do so many whole-school literacy strategies stall before they take hold? This core course walks you through building a strategy that actually sticks — from auditing current practice to designing tiered provision, communicating your "why" using Sinek's Golden Circle, and knowing what to stop doing (de-implementation) as much as what to start.You'll work with the EEF's implementation framework, compare theory of change against logic models, and see how schools have built a genuine culture of literacy rather than a compliance exercise. The course closes with a nine-part implementation planning activity, supported by a worked model example, so you leave with the first draft of your own strategy in hand.Module 1.3 — From Self-Reflection to Strategy: Literacy Assessment, Evidence &amp; Impact (CORE) (Primary/EY &amp; Secondary)A strategy is only as strong as the evidence behind it. This core course covers how to assess literacy accurately, use standardised testing appropriately, build targeted intervention pathways, and set up monitoring and evaluation systems that show genuine impact — not just activity.You'll move from self-reflection on current assessment practice through to a practical evidence and impact plan for your own context, supported by a dedicated implementation and impact-review template you can put to immediate use back in school.Module 1.4 — Delivering the Strategy &amp; Developing Others (CORE) (Primary/EY &amp; Secondary)Strategy on paper means nothing without the staff to deliver it. This core course focuses on the leadership skill of developing others — effective CPD design grounded in andragogy, the EEF's mechanisms for effective professional development, and practical coaching and mentoring approaches for supporting colleagues' literacy practice.You'll also explore Guskey's model for evaluating the impact of CPD itself, so you can judge not just whether training happened, but whether it changed practice and outcomes. This course equips you to lead the people side of your literacy strategy, not just the plan.Module 1.5 — How to Ensure Literacy Strategies Stick Across Subjects (Secondary)Literacy strategies often live and die in English lessons alone. This course tackles disciplinary literacy head-on — the specific reading and writing demands of history, science, maths and every other subject — and gives subject leaders and literacy leads practical tools to embed literacy across the whole curriculum.Drawing on research from Wexler, Cain, Fitzgerald and Shanahan, and Quigley among others, you'll learn three concrete levers for change: cutting unnecessary complexity, making connections between subjects explicit, and helping teachers make conscious choices about the texts they use. A full cross-curricular planning tool and reflection journal support you in applying this directly within departments.Module 1.6 — Improving Literacy Outcomes for ELL &amp; Emirati Students (Primary/EY &amp; Secondary)Supporting English Language Learners and Emirati students well requires more than generic literacy strategies. This course focuses on the specific knowledge, approaches and adjustments needed to raise literacy outcomes for these students — addressing language acquisition, cultural context, and targeted classroom support within the UAE setting.Primary and secondary phases draw on separate, phase-specific content to reflect the different needs of EY/primary and secondary EAL and Emirati learners, giving you strategies you can apply immediately with the students in front of you.
