Developing & Implementing a Whole School Lliteracy Strategy

Why do 70–80% of school improvement initiatives fail to achieve their intended goals? Join this evidence-informed, self-directed course exploring how to build a whole-school literacy strategy that actually sticks. Drawing on the DfE's three-strand model, EEF implementation guidance, and research from Mannion, Sinek, Clear and Rogers, you'll audit current literacy practice, design a tiered (MTSS) provision model, and use the COM-B model and Habit Loop to change teaching behaviours. Explore why literacy strategies commonly fail — from poster culture to activity-led initiatives — and learn practical tools including a worked audit tool, a theory of change and logic model, and four de-implementation strategies (Remove, Reduce, Re-engineer, Replace) to clear space for new practice. Real school case studies show what a genuine culture of literacy looks like. You will leave with a complete nine-part implementation plan, a personal implementation commitment, and the confidence to lead literacy improvement that lasts.By the end of this course participants will be able to:1. Understand why whole-school literacy strategies commonly fail and identify warning signs within their own school context.2. Audit current literacy provision using evidence-informed approaches to identify priorities.3. Design a coherent whole-school literacy strategy.4. Plan the implementation and de-implementation of literacy practices using the EEF implementation framework, the COM-B model and habit-building principles.5.
